Highlights from Our 2017

Lane Family 2017

2017 was quite an eventful year for the Lane family. I officially became a Mom of two toddlers! Mikey turned 3 in February and Tucker turned 2 a little over a month later in March. Life got a whole lot crazier and funnier, and quite frankly more exhausting. Here are a few of my favorite highlights from our 2017.

We signed Mikey up for his first organized sport, soccer, in April. Okay, so it in actuality was just three soccer practices with no actual games, but it sure made him feel special! And if you’ve never witnessed 3-year-olds exercising together I highly recommend you check out this video! I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Mikey was also potty trained this year! I had my fingers crossed that if I just not push it on him and wait long enough that I may get lucky enough to potty train both boys at once. A mom can dream, right? It seemed like Mikey potty trained almost overnight. It was like something just clicked for him and with only a couple accidents here and there, he was completely potty trained, even through the night!

Tucker had other plans for me of course and still refuses to go on the potty to this day. I asked him after New Years if he was going to try going on the potty this year. He looked right at me and very seriously said: “No, next year Mommy.” I sure hope he means when he’s 3 and not 2019.

Although I didn’t manage to potty train Tucker, I did get him to ditch his binky completely! That’s quite an accomplishment in itself if you ask me.

In May I challenged myself to take control of my stress levels and created my own 30 Day Yoga Pose Challenge, which I actually stuck to and completed! I’m quite proud of myself for that as I’m the type to always set big goals for myself and then life gets in the way and my goals seem to slip by the wayside. Just look at the blog as an example, I do my best to keep up with it and post regularly but it just doesn’t always happen the way I like it to.

If you follow along with us more daily on Instagram you may I noticed I have quite an obsession with the Metro Parks in Columbus. We’ve hiked at or attended programs at 16 of the now 19 Metro Parks and plan to cross the last three parks off our list this year. The boys earned their Metro Park Explorer badges in 2017 and I’m so looking forward to earning their next badge for 2018.

Kevin left his job at Ohio Health at the end of August to go back to consulting. He got a great position as an Analyst in Spokane, WA and now even though he has to travel for work again it’s nowhere near as hard as we thought it’d be. His current job allows him to work almost every other week remote so instead of being home two weekends a month like he was last time he was consulting, he’s actually only gone about 10 days a month. So much more doable for both of us, although the strain of traveling all the time is still there.

In September, Mikey started preschool. Something I totally wasn’t ready for at the time, but am so glad we did it now. We enrolled Mikey in speech therapy back in April and after he was diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech it was recommended that we get him an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) and enroll him in preschool. He now attends Head Start five days a week for full days and has a Speech and OT therapist that comes to our house once a week for additional therapy on top of his speech at Columbus Speech and Hearing. I must say looking back over just the last four months since he’s been in school we’ve seen such a HUGE jump in his progress with speech and are so incredibly proud of him. Not to mention he adores his teachers, therapists and new friends at school. He truly is our little social butterfly and I just love watching him grow.

In September we also enrolled the boys in swimming lessons at Goldfish Swim School. After our time in Florida this past August I realized how important getting the boys comfortable in the water really was, even while living in Ohio.  The boys have really flourished since starting lessons and look forward to going every week.  Mikey loves wearing his goggles and putting his face in the water and Tucker has become quite a pro at the sea otter float. It’s also a great activity to keep the boys busy during the winter months up north.

In October, my brother Cody FINALLY married his longtime girlfriend Laura. I am so happy to finally have her officially be my sister and loved every minute of our time in Asheville, NC celebrating them and their wedding. Mikey and Tucker were their ring bearers and absolutely killed it walking down the aisle, waving to all the guests while sporting their suspenders, bow ties, and FSU capes. Kevin officiated the wedding and I’m so happy our family got to have such a special part of their big day.

On a sad note, we lost our dog of nine years, MJ, suddenly in October. Kev and I got her way back in our college days. We have so many wonderful memories with her and will cherish them for years to come, from her thinking she was a Husky the first few years of her life, to traveling cross country.  MJ and I always held a love/hate relationship as we were always fighting to be Kevin’s number one girl from the getgo. She was truly part of our family and we all miss her very much, even the boys who ask about her all the time. We tell them she’s with her PawPaw (Kevin’s dad) now probably following him around and licking his calves like she always used to do.

On a much happier note, we decided to finally get the dog we’ve been talking about for years, a German Shepherd puppy.  We named him Winston and he was part of me and the boys’ Christmas present. MJ was certainly no guard dog, but I did always feel safer knowing she would alert me if someone tried to come into our house.  With Kevin traveling for work again, I feel so much better having Winston around and look forward to training him and watching him bond with our boys.

Last, but certainly not least, we spent THREE WEEKS in Florida for Christmas this year.  It had been two years since Kevin had been back home, and quite some time since we got to spend some real quality time with our families. We got to see a lot of family and friends and the boys loved spending time with their cousins.  We also took the boys to Disney for the first time, but more on that later.

So that pretty much sums up our year.  I noticed there was a lot more Mikey in this post than anyone else but it was quite a big year for him. I’m sure 2018 will hold some big firsts for Tucker.

I don’t typically make New Year’s resolutions because it’s always too disappointing when I don’t accomplish them but this year I am setting a few goals for myself.

Goals for 2018

  1. Be more patient….with myself, my children and life in general.
  2. Get healthier! Both with my diet and exercise.
  3. And for the blog, post at least twice a month.

What are your favorite memories of 2017 and what goals have you set for yourself for 2018, is any?
