Farm Fun, Apple Picking and Apple Butter: Mike and Tuck Kick Off Fall

Fall is in full swing at the Lane household and although the weather may not be cooling off just yet we haven’t let that keep us from having some good ole fall fun!

The first weekend of fall the boys and I went to Lehner’s Pumpkin Farm.  We went here last year and Mikey has been talking about the indoor maze they have set up ever since.  Since it was their opening weekend the crowds were minimal and the boys and I were able to explore the entire farm in no time.

They even had baby bunnies the boys could hold. Tucker immediately started loving on his while Mikey wasn’t so sure.

I let the boys each pick out a small pumpkin to take home and paint.

The following weekend our whole family went to The Orchard & Co. to go apple picking.  This is also a place we ventured to last year but due to the weather last year we didn’t get a chance to pick the apples. This year they were ripe for picking and the boys loved all the activities the farm had to offer like the zip line, hill slide, and a pony ride for Tucker.

When we got home I found a simple recipe for apple butter which I tweaked to my liking and we made a batch.

Apple Butter Recipe

            Apple Butter

  • 10  medium apples
  • 1/4 c  water
  • 1/3 c  sugar
  • 1/3 c  brown sugar
  • 1 TB  cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp  nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp  cloves

I cored, peeled and chopped about 10 apples (I used a mixture of Jonagold and Smoothie Golden Delicious that we picked).  I threw the chopped apples in the crockpot with 1/4 cup of water and let it cook on low for about 12 hours.

Then I added the sugar and spices and let it cook for another couple of hours on low. I let it cool and then tossed it in my Ninja blender to smooth it out.

Done and ready to store. I plan on freezing a of couple jars.

The boys also decided what they want to be for Halloween this year.  Mikey is going to be his favorite Super Hero, Superman and Tucker is going to be Flash.  Kevin and I plan on dressing up as Batman and Wonder Woman to complete our little Justice League.

Luckily we got costumes for the boys early this year because we have to exchange Mikey’s for a bigger size. I’m so not ready to start shopping in the big kids section for him.

That’s all for now but fall is moving along quickly in our household and I’m sure I’ll be back with more fun soon.
